Pathologists’ Assistant Awards
PA Section Awards
Lloyd A. Kennedy Award
The Lloyd A. Kennedy Pathologists’ Assistant Award, previously known as the Pathologists’ Assistant Award, is funded by the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine at Queen’s University and Kingston General Hospital, and provided by the Canadian Association of Pathologists.
This award was created in rememberance of the Pathologists’ Assistant, Lloyd A Kennedy, as a Recognition of Excellence. Lloyd started his career at Queen’s University/Kingston General Hospital as a research technician in 1975, and went through training to become a Pathologists’ Assistant. In 1982, he became the first Canadian PA to successfully receive certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). He became a leading force in both education and advocacy for the profession of the Pathologists’ Assistant in Canada, building the foundation for the creation of the PA Section, which was founded in 2007, and served as its first Chair.
Lloyd was widely respected for his extraordinary technical, interpretive, and teaching skills in autopsy, and well loved for his supportive, creative, and humorous nature. The development of a superb digital photography and sophisticated image analysis system at Kingston General Hospital would not have been possible without him. He received Kingston’s R.S. Aprentice Award for Excellence in Resident Teaching many times due to his passion for education. He also made major scholarly, educational, and administrative contributions to the Biologic Photographer’s Association, the Pathologists’ Assistant Section of CAP-ACP, and the American Assocation of Pathologists’ Assistants (AAPA).
This award now serves to recognize a Pathologists’ Assistant who is a member (in good standing) of the PA Section of the CAP-ACP in recognition of their outstanding contributions to continuing education and professional development in the area of medical laboratory practice.
